We turned the façade of the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong (the International Commerce Center, 484m tall) into a countdown (in seconds) to 0:00 1st July 2047 - when the 50-year period that Hong Kong is guaranteed to be 'remained unchanged' after it was returned to Chinese sovereignty will come to an end. The Countdown Machine, as a public artwork on the LED façade of the ICC, will appear for one minute every night during the period 17th May 2016 - 22nd June 2016.
Since the Umbrella Movement ended in 2014, the frustration towards a halted democracy in the city has been transformed into concerns about and anxiety towards the fate of Hong Kong in 2047. Citizens of Hong Kong, particularly the younger generation, have advocated that the future of the city should be determined by Hong Kong people.
By visualizing the countdown to 2047 (a previously unseen number just below 1 billion) in a public display, we seek to further highlight the importance of the '2047 issue' and hope that more debates and actions will emerge. We hope to draw the world's attention to the city's ongoing struggle.
You are invited to send photos to friends and relatives to initiate discussions on Hong Kong’s ‘2047 question’. If you upload the photo to social medias, you may add the hashtag #2047hk .
The Countdown Machine is ‘embedded’ in another artwork created for an art exhibition. Due to technical reasons, the number shown on the façade is not the most accurate one. Please visit the Countdown Machine’s website for the most accurate numbers – the website will remain online in the future.
